Who does Google think you are? - Beth Thoren

* The first result is a press release from October 2003 announcing Thoren’s appointment as head of digital marketing at BBC Marketing, Communications & Audiences

* Next is Thoren’s Linked In profile, which has correct job title and employer information, but only 12 connections
.
* Third is a profile on ZoomInfo, which has Thoren’s title as director of communications. The profile does lead through to 8 articles featuring Thoren but these all date from 2006 and 2007.

* Next is a profile page on LookUpAnyone.com, which does not provide any information.

* Finally we find Thoren’s entry in Marketing’s ‘Little Black Book 2009’

VERDICT

Having a top result that is so out-of-date (it’s 3 years since Thoren left the BBC) is a bad start although understandable in view of the huge authority the BBC website commands online. That said, Thoren has clearly not made much effort to ensure her current role and the challenges she is working on are clearly represented to anyone trying to find more information on her online. We can work out where she works and maybe, just, what her job title is but that’s about it.

ACTION

Getting a mention on the BBC to move down the rankings can be a big ask. Besides, having worked for the BBC is a good feather to have in your cap so it might not be so bad to have the link featuring. However, there has to be a more pro-active approach to tidying up the rest of the profile. More information and regular updates on Linked In and more social networking activity in general could be a good start. But we need to know what Thoren’s level of responsibility is and to do this requires a focused online PR strategy.
