Who does Google think you are?

The first result takes us to a brief profile on the Guardian’s ‘comment is free’ site. Next is the one comment Sands has left on the ‘comment is free’ site. It dates from January 2007 and is a critical comment on the Fantasy Rock Camp Third is a page on the board of Guardian News & Media from the Guardian’s online press office. This is the first result that gives us a little more detail on Sands career. The fourth result is Sands’ profile on the zoominfo website. The information is accurate but again there is little detail The final result takes us to LinkedIn but the profile we find is that of a New Orleans based COO. Verdict As The Guardian has such a high google ranking it’s not surprising that Sands’ two profiles on the ‘comment is free’ site and the press office page feature so prominently. The result is that we are left in no doubt about what Sands does but we have very little information on how he does it and no information on what he has achieved for his employer. Like practically every other publisher The Guardian is having to cope with a series of challenges affecting the entire industry and it would be good to see evidence of what Sands is doing to tackle these challenges. Action The debate on how publishers are going to remain viable businesses is a hot topic and Sands could make it a point to ensure that The Guardian plays a leading role in shaping industry thinking on the subject. More media and speaking activity would not only benefit his employer but also help to create a more rounded Google profile which allows those who are interested to gain a better understanding of his role.
